It is increasingly important that exploration efforts are allocated to the most promising regions and areas. Limited personnel and financial resources are often chasing too many – and not necessarily the best – exploration opportunities. Although prospects are the ultimate target of exploration efforts, sound prospect analysis pre-supposes significant investments in regional expertise and data. These investments are often irreversible. Decisions that allocate regional exploration effort therefore need to be based on realistic and consistent estimates of basin and play potential.
The GeoX suite of play assessment tools support a feature-based approach to play and play fairway assessment. With the feature-based approach, success-case Yet-To-Find (YTF) potential in a play is the product of the future success rate of the prospects, the number of prospects (potential accumulations) in the play and the size of these prospects.
The feature-based approach makes the GeoX play assessment tools suitable for the analysis of both frontier and more mature exploration provinces. In frontier plays, assessment is based on postulated features using calibration ffrom analogs. At the other end of the maturity scale, with extensive data coverage, YTF potential is the sum of the resources in a complete census of all undrilled prospects.
gPlayR supports rapid, quality-assured analysis of Yet-to-Find potential in play and part-plays. Features can be both assessed prospects and postulated potential accumulations. Postulated features can be modeled with the full range of single target (segment) modeling options. Assessment results include expected number of discoveries, success YTF volumes in the play and risked YTF volumes. Size-by-rank estimates can be used to evaluate the economic potential of plays.
With the gPlaySum tool you can estimate the YTF potential in play fairways and stacked plays by aggregation of the assessments of resources in the relevant part-plays. The aggregation can honor both play risk dependencies and across-part-play volumetric correlations.
The suite of GeoX play assessment tools also includes a play scenario tool and a series of assessment aids. The scenario tool enables you to do probabilistic aggregation of alternative play asessment scenarios. The scenarios can capture and express a more realistic assessment of the full range of YTF outcomes. Assessment aids such as the FSD Estimator facilitate effective use of calibration and analog data to estimate field size distributions.
