Assessment of Play Fairway Yet-To-Find Potential

The course covers the basics of how to do play assessment and follows a workshop format.  Primary emphasis is on the assessment of yet-to-find (YTF) resources in basins and plays with a play fairway and feature-based approach. To this end the workshop covers the basics of the play assessment methodology. The course involves active work with realistic cases. Exercises will use both hand-calculations - to ensure solid understanding of fundamentals of risk and uncertainty assessment, while use of GeoX will enable realistic assessments and facilitate implementation. The course is built around an integrated exercise that gives broad exposure to main issues. This case is complemented with work on assessment of YTF potential in (a) company specific case (s). Main topics:

  • Introduction – Play assessment uses, outputs and the play fairway approach
  • Brief Reminder: Basics of risk and uncertainty assessment
  • Basics of feature-based play assessment – what are we counting, sizing and risking?
  • Exercise Case: Rift Basin with 2 Play Fairways
  • Field Density and Trap Density Method to counting postulated accumulations
  • Field Size Distribution
  • Limits – large field minimum, large field maximum & resource minimum &  small field fraction
  • Introduction to GeoX and using gPlayR
  • Using assessed prospects & alternative approaches to modeling accumulation sizes
  • Aggregation of volumes in part-plays & stacked play fairway elements with risk dependency and volume correlation
  • Doing aggregation of part-plays with GeoX
  • Review of Company play fairway - existing data and plans
  • Initial assessment of 2-3 part-plays

Prerequisites: The course is intended for engineers, geologists, geophysicists, economists, planners, managers and technical support staff.
